In September 2016, Abraham Poincheval experimented with another way of inhabiting the earth, spending a week at the top of a 20-metre mast placed on the forecourt of the Gare de Lyon in Paris. Isolated in the midst of travellers and visible to all, the artist became a witness to the city in turmoil. The small platform, on which he could sit or lie down, had all the necessary equipment to live several days in autonomy. This experience of confinement in the air became a performance on a lookout post, six meters from the coast, then in front of La Criée, the contemporary art centre in Rennes. For each new challenge, the artist perches a little further from the ground, like a stylite, those paleo-Christian hermits who led a solitary and meditative life at the top of columns, which became higher and higher as they rose spiritually. Abraham Poincheval is an insatiable explorer. The journeys he undertakes require total physical and mental commitment and lead him to experience altered states of consciousness. Whether itinerant or static, his expeditions contradict the logic of an expanding territory. «Vigie » stages Abraham Poincheval in an outdoor happening during the PES_CE final event. The action speaks of inhabiting and sharing space. Abraham Poincheval is interested in the territory of the storks of Malpartida de Cáceres (SP) and in our relationship with the living world.
