Exhibition PES 2019 @ Denison Art Space in Newark, Ohio – USA, sept. 26th – oct. 18th 2019
Denison Art Space in Newark is an exciting new multiarts center located in downtown Newark, in the historic, newly renovated, Thirty-One West development. The space consists of a flexible gallery area, two music teaching studios, and an artist-in-residence studio that welcomes artists who are looking to take advantage of the rich history of downtown Newark.

In 2018, Micaela Vivero, artist and associate professor
at Denison University, was invited to participate in an
artist-in-residence program in Covilhã, Portugal as part of
partnership between the Entre Serras Project (PES) and
the University of Beira Interior’s Wool Museum (MUSLAN).
The presence of PES at Denison Art Space in Newark
(DASiN) is a result of her interest in bringing PES to
Newark, OH, USA.
In the historical continuity of an art production directly
related to ecology, PES takes place in the border territory
of Portugal and Spain, a border broken over the centuries
by shepherds and textile producers who stubbornly
furrowed the “route of the wool” into the mountainous
continuum, shaping identically the peoples on both sides,
closer to each other than to their national decision-making
centers.
Since 2017, committed to creating a contemporary art
network in this territory, PES has been establishing
partnerships that allow the realization of a new addition
every year, having already involved artists and academics
from Portugal, Spain, France, Brazil and Ecuador,
always with a focus on artistic production linked to the
environment. So far the following have been partnering
institutions: Wool Museum (Covilã, Portugal), Vostell
Museum (Malpartida de Cáceres, Spain), Côa Museum (Vila
Nova de Foz Côa, Portugal), Sabugal Museum (Sabugal,
Portugal), Archeological Museum (Fundão, Portugal),
Gassendi and CAIRN Museum (Digne-les-Bains, France),
University of Beira Interior (Covilhã, Portugal), ESAAix
School of Art (Aix-en-Provence, France), New Hand Lab
Cultural Association (Covilhã, Portugal) and now Denison
University (Ohio – USA).
The 2019 PES program, promoted by the Schist Villages
Tourism Development Agency (ADXTUR) and Fundão
City Council (iNature program), focused on two artistic
residencies that took place between Barroca do Zêzere and
Cabeço de Pião, Portugal.
PES 2019 exhibition and DASiN
• PONTO ZERO of Rodrigo Braga is closely linked
to experiences lived locally and in contact with minerals,
fauna, flora and people of the location. The place where he
completed an artist-in-residence program was identified
following two exploratory visits to the region, which
coincided with two public interventions by Braga in the
city of Covilhã, Portugal, in November 2018 in the context
of the event “Magical Mountain” (http://montanhamagica.
ubi.pt), organized by the Department of Media Arts,
University of Beira Interior, and the New Hand Lab Cultural
Association. In addition, the exhibition “Agriculture of
Image / Image of Agriculture,” at Wool Museum, Covilhã
and the Archeological Museum, Fundão, allowed him to
present his work on the Brazilian Amazon rainforest to the
general public.
• The artist Laetitia Morais presents a videographic
work (TARDE FRIA/ 2019) that aims to question the
effects of surface mineral exploration, both on the
landscape and on the inhabitants’ experience (Schist
Villages / Barroca do Zêzere, Portugal, 15-21 August,
2019).
• The PIRILAMPOS intervention by Erik Samakh,
an artist who in 2017 installed lights that simulate fireflies
in the region, simultaneously symbolizing the resilience of
biodiversity and adherence to the PES contemporary art
network, building an in situ cartography of the territories

• A video by Virginia López (PERSISTENCIA DEL
CONTACTO 2017), which tells us about a monument that
becomes excavated by subtraction and is the result of a
collective action, in which form obeys the function and is
born of matter.
• This exhibition also incorporates the results of
a photography workshop sponsored by ADXTUR / PES
2019, which took place between July 15 and 20, 2019 at
Barroca do Zêzere with the guidance of Rodrigo Braga
and Carlos Casteleira. It will be possible to explore the
work-in-progress WALKING THE DATA / PLOTMAP,
a digital cartography research program developed by
the Aix-en-Provence School of Art, a program that will
integrate PES information and cross-cutting artistic
proposals (http://walking-the-data.esaaix.fr/).
This collaboration with Denison University includes
an artist-in-residence program by Erik Samakh, Carlos
Casteleira and Laetitia Morais at DASiN. A collaboration
with the landscape around Newark, Ohio, will temporarily
integrate the PES network.
Artists who engage with living beings through images
and their specific practices, using materials and
energies, explore various relationship possibilities with
the environment. PES aims to establish links between
communities and ecological issues, developing works
based on the relationships between living beings, space
and time.
As humans we use legends, stories, imagery and
beliefs to make sense of the cosmos and the worlds we
encounter. One of the functions of art is undoubtedly to
create stories capable of generating symbioses between
living beings and their surroundings, which forms a
whole. Augustin Berque, a French orientalist geographer,
calls the study of these eco-techno-symbolic systems
“mesology.” It is this concept that PES proposes to
explore by inviting artists to create (in) these territories.

Em 2018 e no âmbito de uma parceria do Projecto Entre
Serras (PES) com o Museu de Lanifícios da Universidade
da Beira Interior (MUSLAN), Micaela Vivero, artista e
professora da Universidade de Denison, foi convidada
a fazer uma residência artística na Covilhã, Portugal. A
presença do PES na Galeria de Art Denison, em Newark
(DASiN) resulta do interesse manifestado por esta docente
em levar o PES a Newark, Ohio – EUA.
Na continuidade histórica de uma arte diretamente
relacionada com a ecologia, o PES acontece no território
raiano de Portugal e Espanha, uma fronteira quebrada ao
longo dos séculos por pastores e produtores de têxteis
que teimosamente sulcaram a “rota da lã” no contínuo
montanhoso, moldando de forma idêntica os povos de
ambos os lados, mais perto entre si que dos respetivos
centros de decisão nacionais.
Desde 2017 empenhado em criar uma rede de arte
contemporânea no referido território, o PES vai
estabelecendo parcerias que permitem a realização de
uma nova edição cada ano, tendo já envolvido artistas
e académicos de Portugal, Espanha, França, Brasil e
Ecuador, sempre com um foco na produção artística
ligada aos meios envolventes. Foram parceiros: Museu de
Lanifícios (Covilhã, Portugal), Museu Vostell (Malpartida
de Cáceres, Espanha), Museu do Côa (Vila Nova de Foz
Côa, Portugal), Museu do Sabugal (Sabugal, Portugal),
Museu Arqueológico (Fundão, Portugal), Museu Gassendi
e CAIRN (Digne-les-Bains, França), Universidade da Beira
Interior (Covilhã, Portugal), Escola Superior de Arte (Aixen-
Provence, França), Associação Cultural New Hand Lab
(Covilhã, Portugal) e agora Denison University (Ohio, EUA).
A programação PES 2019, promovida pela Agência para o
Desenvolvimento Turístico das Aldeias do Xisto (ADXTUR)
e a Câmara Municipal do Fundão (programa iNature),
centrou-se em duas residências artísticas que aconteceram
entre a Barroca do Zêzere e o Cabeço do Pião, Portugal.
Na exposição destaca-se PONTO ZERO de Rodrigo Braga,
cujo trabalho está intimamente ligado a experiências
vividas localmente e no contacto com o mineral, a fauna, a
flora e as pessoas. O local onde viria a fazer uma residência
artística foi identificado na sequência de duas visitas
exploratórias à região, as quais se fizeram coincidir com
duas intervenções públicas de Rodrigo Braga na cidade
da Covilhã, Portugal, em novembro de 2018 no âmbito das
Jornadas «Montanha Mágica» (http://montanhamagica.
ubi.pt/), organizadas pelo departamento de Media Artes da
Universidade da Beira Interior, e na Associação Cultural
New Hand Lab. Em simultâneo, a exposição “Agricultura
da imagem / Imagem da agricultura”, no Museu dos
Lanifícios, Covilhã e no Museu Arqueológico, Fundão,
permitia apresentar o seu trabalho sobre a Amazónia ao
público em geral.
A artista plástica Laetitia Morais apresenta uma obra
videográfica (TARDE FRIA | 2019) que pretende
questionar os efeitos da exploração mineral à superfície,
quer na paisagem, quer na vivência dos habitantes
(Barroca do Zêzere, Portugal, 15-21 de agosto 2019).
Também presentes na exposição PES 2019 na DASiN,
estão:
• A intervenção PIRILAMPOS de Erik Samakh, artista
que em 2017 instalou na região pequenos artefactos
electrónicos que simulam pirilampos, simultaneamente
simbolizando a resiliência da biodiversidade e a adesão
à rede de arte contemporânea PES, construindo uma
cartografia in situ dos territórios envolvidos. Fotografias de

• Um vídeo de Virgínia López (PERSISTENCIA DEL
CONTACTO 2017), que nos fala de um monumento que
nasce escavado, por subtração, e é o resultado de uma
ação coletiva, em que a forma obedece à função e nasce
da matéria.
• Os resultados do workshop de fotografia “Vendo para
crer, revendo para criar”, patrocinado pela ADXTUR |
PES 2019, que decorreu entre 15 e 20 de julho de 2019
na Barroca do Zêzere com orientação de Rodrigo Braga
e Carlos Casteleira. Estes resultados são apresentados
no work-in-progress WALKING THE DATA/PLOTMAP,
um programa de investigação em cartografia digital
desenvolvido pela Escola Superior de Arte de Aix-en-
Provence. Este programa irá integrando informação da
rede PES e propostas artísticas transversais (http://
walking-the-data.esaaix.fr/).
A presente colaboração com a Universidade de Denison
inclui uma residência artística de Erik Samakh, Carlos
Casteleira e Laetitia Morais no DASiN. Numa colaboração
com Marti Chaatsmith, Director do OSU Newark
Earthworks Center, a obra PIRILAMPOS | Newark
integrará temporariamente a rede PES.
Os artistas que se envolvem com o vivo, através das
imagens e das suas práticas específicas, usando
materiais e energias, exploram várias possibilidades de
relacionamento com o meio ambiente. O PES pretende
estabelecer ligações entre as comunidades e questões
ecológicas, desenvolvendo obras alicerçadas no vivo, no
espaço e no tempo.
Entre o Céu e a Terra estão os humanos que dão sentido
ao cosmos e aos mundos com as suas lendas, estórias,
imaginário e crenças. Uma das funções da arte é sem
dúvida a de urdir estórias capazes de questionar e gerar
simbioses entre os seres vivos e os meios envolventes
com os quais formam um todo. Augustin Berque, geógrafo
orientalista, chama ao estudo destes sistemas eco-tecnosimbólicos
“mesologia”. É este conceito que o PES se
propõe explorar através de convites a artistas para criarem
(n)estes territórios.
